What did the Days Corner witnesses report?

The Days Corner report is strongest as a near-road witness account, but its few-second duration and heavy rain keep the evidence fragile.

Introduction

The Days Corner sighting is one of Prince Edward Island’s more vivid UFO witness reports, but it is also a good example of how a striking account can remain difficult to evaluate. According to the official report that entered Canada’s federal UFO files, a Bedeque family encountered a brightly lit object near Days Corner late on the night of 1 October 1977. The witnesses described not only unusual lights and a distinctive shape but also a loud boom and a scratching noise as the object passed overhead. Yet the entire event reportedly lasted only a few seconds and occurred during heavy rain, leaving investigators with a memorable story but little hard evidence. What did the Days Corner witnesses report?

The late-night drive near Bedeque

The account preserved in the National Research Council and RCMP records states that Rosemary Anger contacted the Summerside RCMP shortly after midnight on 1 October 1977. She reported that she and her two daughters had been driving home through the Days Corner area near Bedeque when they observed an unusual aerial object at approximately 11:50 p.m. The weather conditions were poor, with heavy rain falling at the time. According to the report, Anger and her eldest daughter, 21-year-old Kim Greencorn, first noticed a lighted object ahead and to the left of their vehicle. The object then appeared to approach them closely enough for them to observe details of its form. The official record emphasises that the witnesses believed they obtained a good look at the object before it passed overhead. A notable detail is that the youngest daughter, Echo Anger, did not see the object itself. Her position in the vehicle or the brief duration of the event may have prevented a visual observation. However, she reportedly heard the unusual sound associated with the sighting. The lights, shape, boom and scratching sound

The witness description combines visual and auditory elements. Rosemary Anger reportedly compared the object’s appearance to two lampshades arranged inside a broad V-shaped form. Around this structure was a glow, while a mist-like effect appeared above it. Such descriptions are difficult to visualise precisely because they rely on comparisons rather than measurements, but they suggest the witnesses believed they were observing a structured object rather than a simple point of light. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "8000 pages of Declassified Canadian UFO…UFO REPORT As 01 OCT 77 10002-11002 Be CLEAR | Ce MR LOUIS RICHA…

The most dramatic part of the report concerns the object’s apparent proximity. Anger estimated that it passed directly over the vehicle at a height of roughly 50 feet. As it did so, the witnesses reported hearing first a boom and then a loud scratching sound. Immediately afterwards the object disappeared from view. The report notes that the entire incident lasted only a few seconds. The sound claims are significant because many UFO reports involve silent lights seen at a distance. Here, the witnesses described noises that they associated with the object’s passage. The fact that all three occupants reportedly heard the sounds gives the auditory element some corroboration within the witness group, even though only two people reported seeing the object. Why a vivid account can still be hard to identify

The Days Corner report is often remembered because of its close-range description. A glowing object apparently crossing over a vehicle at low altitude sounds more compelling than a distant light on the horizon. However, several factors make firm conclusions difficult.

First, the observation was extremely brief. The official record states that the sighting lasted only a few seconds. Human observers can accurately report some details during short events, but very brief encounters also increase the risk of misjudging distance, size, speed and shape. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "8000 pages of Declassified Canadian UFO…UFO REPORT As 01 OCT 77 10002-11002 Be CLEAR | Ce MR LOUIS RICHA…

Second, the weather was poor. Heavy rain can distort visibility, create reflections on windscreens, scatter light and complicate estimates of altitude and distance. Rain can also affect how sounds are perceived, particularly at night on rural roads. The report itself explicitly notes the heavy rainfall, making it an important part of any assessment. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "8000 pages of Declassified Canadian UFO…UFO REPORT As 01 OCT 77 10002-11002 Be CLEAR | Ce MR LOUIS RICHA…

Third, there is no known supporting evidence beyond the witness testimony. The surviving record contains the report and the witness description, but no radar data, photographs, physical traces or independent observational records that would allow investigators to test the account against other evidence. This limitation is common in Canadian UFO files, many of which preserve reports without providing enough information for later investigators to reach a definitive conclusion. [Internet Archive+2Digital Collections]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "8000 pages of Declassified Canadian UFO…UFO REPORT As 01 OCT 77 10002-11002 Be CLEAR | Ce MR LOUIS RICHA…

The sound description presents an additional challenge. A boom followed by a scratching noise is unusual, but the record offers no further detail about duration, direction or acoustic character. Without those details it is difficult to compare the sounds reliably with aircraft, weather effects, road noise, electrical phenomena or other conventional explanations. The sounds are therefore part of the witness account rather than independently verifiable evidence. How the witness testimony fits into Prince Edward Island’s UFO history

Within Prince Edward Island’s relatively modest UFO record, Days Corner stands out because it combines a close-range visual description with reported sounds and because it entered the official Canadian reporting system through the RCMP. The surviving file demonstrates that the event was reported promptly and recorded by authorities, which gives historians confidence that the account was not simply a much later retelling. [Internet Archive]archive.orgInternet ArchiveFull text of "8000 pages of Declassified Canadian UFO…UFO REPORT As 01 OCT 77 10002-11002 Be CLEAR | Ce MR LOUIS RICHA…

At the same time, the case illustrates the limits of witness testimony. The description is detailed enough to be memorable but not detailed enough to establish what was actually present in the sky. The combination of heavy rain, a few seconds of observation and the absence of independent evidence leaves the sighting unresolved. For that reason, the Days Corner account remains most valuable as a documented witness narrative within Prince Edward Island’s official UFO paper trail rather than as evidence for any specific explanation.
