Introduction

One of the least appreciated problems in the Kensington video is not what the lights were, but where the recording was made. The footage was filmed from the Twin Shores area on Prince Edward Island’s North Shore, looking out across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. That setting gave the witness an unusually wide, dark view of the sky and sea, making distant lights easier to notice. At the same time, it removed many of the visual references that investigators normally use to estimate distance, altitude, speed and size. As a result, even viewers who agree on what appears in the video can reach very different conclusions about what they are seeing. Horizon doubts illustration 1 Within the broader debate around the Kensington sighting, the horizon problem is important because it affects nearly every proposed explanation. Whether a light was a distant aircraft, a vessel, an atmospheric effect or something genuinely unidentified depends heavily on where it was in three-dimensional space. The Twin Shores viewpoint makes that geometry difficult to recover.

Why the Gulf horizon complicates the video

Twin Shores sits on an exposed stretch of Prince Edward Island coastline facing the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The campground promotes its Gulf beach, extensive coastline and unobstructed sunset views, features that provide long sightlines over open water. For ordinary sightseeing, an open horizon is an advantage. For analysing unusual lights, it can become a limitation. Human observers judge distance partly by comparing an object with familiar reference points such as buildings, trees, roads, shorelines or hills. In the Kensington footage, most of those references disappear into darkness. Viewers are largely left with points of light against a black background. That creates several uncertainties:

  • A small nearby light can resemble a large distant light.
  • Apparent motion may reflect camera movement rather than object movement.
  • A light near the horizon can appear to rise or fall because of atmospheric conditions.
  • Brightness changes can look dramatic when there is no visible foreground for comparison.

These are not unique to the Kensington case. They are common difficulties in night-time observations over water, where the observer often lacks fixed visual markers.

What the Twin Shores viewpoint offered

The location nevertheless had genuine strengths. A coastal observer looking north over the Gulf is less affected by urban light pollution than someone filming from a town centre. The broad field of view also makes it easier to notice lights that would be hidden behind terrain elsewhere. This helps explain why the witness believed the observation was unusual. From a shoreline campsite, a light can remain visible for a long period with few obstructions. Long visibility often encourages witnesses to study an object carefully and compare its behaviour with familiar aircraft or stars.

However, the same openness that improves visibility reduces certainty about range. A light could be hundreds of metres away, several kilometres away, or much farther. Without independent measurements, the observer’s estimate becomes difficult to verify after the fact.

This distinction matters because extraordinary interpretations generally require assumptions about distance and size. If a light is much farther away than assumed, its apparent behaviour may become less unusual. If it is closer than assumed, the same behaviour may seem more remarkable.

Why open water weakens scale and distance

The strongest sceptical criticism of the Kensington footage is not necessarily that the witness misidentified a known object. It is that the video contains too little geometric information to determine where the lights actually were. Open water creates several specific problems.

No visible reference horizon

Night-time horizons over the Gulf can be difficult to distinguish from the sky itself. If viewers cannot confidently identify the horizon line, they cannot accurately determine whether a light is above it, on it, or beyond it.

Unknown bearing

The publicly discussed material does not provide the sort of detailed compass data that would allow investigators to reconstruct exact viewing angles. Without precise bearings, comparing the sighting against aircraft routes, celestial objects or marine traffic becomes harder.

Perspective compression

Distant lights over water can appear closer together than they really are. Two unrelated lights separated by many kilometres may seem to occupy nearly the same area of sky from a single viewpoint.

Lack of triangulation

The Kensington video is essentially a single-camera observation. Without simultaneous recordings from another location, there is no straightforward way to triangulate the position of the lights. A second observer several kilometres away could potentially have narrowed the distance dramatically.

Because of these factors, estimates of speed, altitude and size remain highly dependent on assumptions rather than direct measurement.

What evidence would have fixed the geometry

The most useful missing evidence is not necessarily a sharper image. A higher-resolution recording would still leave investigators struggling if the object’s position remained unknown.

Several forms of information would have been far more valuable:

Multiple viewing locations

If another observer had recorded the same lights from a different position on Prince Edward Island, investigators could have compared sightlines and estimated range through triangulation.

Precise compass bearings

A documented direction of observation would allow comparison with flight paths, marine traffic locations and astronomical objects visible at the same time.

Visible foreground markers

A lighthouse, shoreline feature, structure or other fixed landmark within the frame would provide a reference against which apparent movement could be measured.

Time-synchronised records

Precise timestamps could be matched against aircraft data, weather observations and vessel positions. The closer the timing, the stronger the reconstruction.

Longer contextual footage

Investigators often benefit from footage recorded before and after the unusual event. Wider shots showing the horizon, surrounding sky and camera position can reveal details that are invisible in a tightly framed clip.

None of these would automatically identify the lights, but they would greatly reduce the uncertainty that surrounds the case.

Why the horizon debate still matters

The Twin Shores horizon issue illustrates a broader lesson for modern UFO reporting in Prince Edward Island. The Kensington video is frequently discussed because it includes actual footage rather than only witness recollections. Yet the recording also demonstrates that video evidence is not automatically precise evidence. The North Shore location likely helped the witness notice and document an unusual light display over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At the same time, the darkness, open water and lack of measurable reference points left crucial questions unanswered. The result is a case that remains interesting but difficult to quantify. For many investigators, the key uncertainty is not whether lights were present, but how far away they were and where they sat relative to the Gulf horizon. Until that geometry can be reconstructed, claims about height, speed, manoeuvres or size remain far less certain than the video alone might suggest.
