Within Report Patterns
When UFO reports do not have enough detail
Many Quebec-style reports cannot be judged well because witnesses often describe brief night lights without enough direction, duration or comparison detail.

Introduction
One of the most important patterns in Quebec UFO reporting is also one of the least dramatic: many reports simply do not contain enough information to evaluate properly. Across Canadian UFO surveys, investigators repeatedly find that a large share of sightings consist of brief observations of lights in the night sky, recorded with limited detail about direction, duration, altitude, movement, weather conditions, or nearby reference points. In these cases, the main obstacle is often not secrecy, missing government files, or a lack of interest from investigators. It is the absence of basic observational information. [Science.gc.ca]science.gc.cait investigated in 2023, 31% could not be conclusively explained due to…
This matters because Quebec contributes a substantial number of reports to Canadian UFO databases. When many of those reports lack essential details, researchers can neither confirm an unusual event nor confidently identify a conventional explanation. The result is a category of cases that remain weak not because they are mysterious, but because the evidence is incomplete. What insufficient information means in survey coding
Canadian UFO researchers have long separated reports into different evidential categories. Some sightings are explained as aircraft, satellites, planets, meteors, drones, balloons, or other identifiable phenomena. A smaller number remain unexplained after investigation. Between those groups sits another important category: reports that cannot be assessed because too much information is missing. [Science.gc.ca]science.gc.cait investigated in 2023, 31% could not be conclusively explained due to…
The Office of the Chief Science Advisor’s Sky Canada review highlighted this problem directly. It noted that many reported sightings cannot be conclusively explained because the information provided is too vague for meaningful analysis. The review cited data showing that roughly one-third of cases examined by some Canadian UFO organisations were left unresolved due to insufficient information rather than because investigators found evidence of something extraordinary. [Science.gc.ca]science.gc.cait investigated in 2023, 31% could not be conclusively explained due to…
For investigators, an “insufficient information” classification is not a hidden endorsement of a UFO mystery. It is essentially an admission that the available evidence is inadequate. A report may be sincere and still be impossible to analyse if key observations were never recorded. [Science.gc.ca]science.gc.cait investigated in 2023, 31% could not be conclusively explained due to…
Within Quebec datasets, this issue becomes particularly important because the province produces a large volume of reports. Even a modest percentage of low-detail cases can translate into dozens of records that contribute little to understanding what was actually observed. Why night-light reports are hard to verify
The most common Canadian UFO report remains the nocturnal light: a bright object, glowing point, flashing light, or unusual illumination seen after dark. Recent Canadian surveys continue to show that night-light sightings make up a large proportion of all reports. In 2025, roughly half of Canadian reports fell into nocturnal-light categories. These reports are often difficult to investigate because darkness removes many of the visual clues that help identify an object. Witnesses may see brightness and motion but struggle to estimate:
- Distance
- Size
- Altitude
- Speed
- Direction of travel
- Relationship to landmarks
A light seen above Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Gatineau, or another urban area may be an aircraft approaching an airport, a satellite reflecting sunlight, a bright planet near the horizon, a drone, or a genuinely unidentified object. Without precise details, investigators cannot reliably distinguish between these possibilities. Urban environments create additional complications. Light pollution obscures stars and celestial reference points. Buildings block portions of the sky. Witnesses may only observe an object for a few seconds before it disappears behind structures or clouds. In heavily populated regions, multiple observers can report the same event while still providing incomplete or contradictory descriptions. This can increase the number of reports without necessarily increasing the quality of evidence. The details investigators most need
The difference between a useful UFO report and a weak one is often surprisingly simple.
Researchers generally need enough information to reconstruct what happened and compare it with known aviation, astronomical, meteorological, or satellite activity. The most valuable details include:
- Exact date and time
- Precise location
- Direction of observation
- Estimated elevation above the horizon
- Duration of the sighting
- Apparent movement
- Colour and brightness
- Weather and cloud conditions
- Presence of sound
- Photographs or video with original metadata
Even one missing element can significantly reduce the value of a report. A witness who remembers seeing a bright white light “some time after sunset” provides far less investigative value than someone who records the exact time, compass direction, and duration. The second report can often be compared against aircraft tracks, satellite passes, astronomical objects, or meteor records. The first often cannot. This is why Canadian reporting systems routinely encourage witnesses to submit as much detail as possible. The Canadian UFO Survey’s reporting guidance explicitly emphasises that more details improve the chances of meaningful analysis. When a weak report should not be treated as an unexplained case
A common misunderstanding among UFO enthusiasts is that a case lacking an explanation should automatically be counted as unexplained. Investigators generally reject that approach.
An unexplained case usually means that sufficient information exists to rule out ordinary explanations, yet no definitive identification can be made. An insufficient-information case is different. The evidence is too limited to support either a conventional explanation or an extraordinary one. [Science.gc.ca]science.gc.cait investigated in 2023, 31% could not be conclusively explained due to…
This distinction is crucial when interpreting Quebec reporting statistics. A province may accumulate many reports, but if a significant fraction consists of brief, poorly documented observations, those reports tell researchers relatively little about what people actually saw. High report totals do not automatically translate into high numbers of strong cases. The annual Canadian surveys consistently show that only a small minority of reports remain genuinely unexplained after review. In the 2025 survey, just over three per cent of cases were classified as unexplained, while many others were either identified or lacked enough information for a firm conclusion. What Quebec’s weak-data pattern tells us
Within the broader picture of Quebec UFO reports by numbers and patterns, the prevalence of low-detail sightings offers an important lesson. The province’s reporting totals are influenced not only by population and visibility but also by data quality.
Montreal, Gatineau, Quebec City and other populated regions place large numbers of observers beneath busy skies filled with aircraft, satellites, drones and celestial objects. Many people notice unusual lights, but relatively few record the information needed for rigorous investigation. As a result, some reports remain permanently indeterminate. [WSI Images]img1.wsimg.comFinal V2 The 2025 Canadian UFO SurveyWSI ImagesThe 2025 SurveyMarch 17, 2026 — 9 Mar 2026 — However, over the years, even UFO has come to mean 'aliens' in common parlance, so…
For historians and researchers, this means that caution is essential. A weakly documented report should not be dismissed as worthless, but neither should it be elevated into evidence of an extraordinary phenomenon. In Quebec’s UFO record, some of the most persistent mysteries arise not from what witnesses reported, but from what they were unable to record before the moment passed. [Science.gc.ca]science.gc.cait investigated in 2023, 31% could not be conclusively explained due to…
