Venus is the classic example. It is often the brightest object in the night sky apart from the Moon and can remain low above the horizon for long periods. Aircraft create a different illusion. A plane flying directly towards an observer may appear almost stationary because its motion is largely along the line of sight rather than across it. For several minutes it can seem to hover in one place. Only when it changes direction or passes overhead does its movement become obvious. Manitoba’s major flight corridors and the approaches to airports around Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson and other communities mean that aircraft lights regularly become part of the province’s UFO reporting pattern. A distant aircraft seen over a dark horizon can look dramatically different from the same aircraft viewed in daylight.
Why distance and height are easy to misread
Night skies remove many of the visual clues people use to estimate scale.
During the day, buildings, trees and terrain help the brain judge distance. At night, a single light may be visible without any surrounding reference points. The result is a common perceptual problem: observers know where a light is in the sky but have little reliable information about how far away it is.

Investigators typically find the following details most useful:
- Exact date and time.
- Viewing location and direction of travel.
- Estimated elevation above the horizon.
- Weather and cloud conditions.
- Duration of the observation.
- Whether the object changed brightness, colour or apparent size.
- Presence of sound.
- Independent witnesses from different locations.
- Photographs or video accompanied by original files and metadata.
