Introduction
One of the simplest ways to assess a Manitoba UFO report is to ask a basic question: how long did the sighting last? Duration does not identify an object by itself, but it is often one of the strongest clues available when witnesses have little else to go on. A brilliant object that flashes across the sky in a few seconds points investigators in a very different direction from a light that appears to hover for twenty minutes.

A sighting that lasts only a few seconds is frequently consistent with a meteor or fireball rather than an aircraft or hovering object. At the opposite end of the spectrum are reports lasting many minutes or even hours. Such cases are generally less consistent with meteors and more consistent with slow-moving or apparently stationary objects.

In Manitoba, several factors encourage this kind of misidentification:
- Flat terrain creates long sightlines to the horizon.
- Bright planets such as Venus can appear unusually large or luminous near the horizon.

Did the witness estimate the duration accurately?
Human estimates can be unreliable. A startling event lasting three seconds may feel much longer, while a slow-moving light observed casually can seem shorter than it was. Investigators therefore compare witness estimates with astronomical, aviation and meteor records whenever possible.
