Introduction

One of the simplest ways to assess a Manitoba UFO report is to ask a basic question: how long did the sighting last? Duration does not identify an object by itself, but it is often one of the strongest clues available when witnesses have little else to go on. A brilliant object that flashes across the sky in a few seconds points investigators in a very different direction from a light that appears to hover for twenty minutes.

Duration Clues illustration 1 This matters because many Manitoba reports consist of lights in the sky seen from long distances across open prairie landscapes. Witnesses may not know the object’s size, altitude or speed, but they often remember whether it vanished almost immediately or remained visible for an extended period. Canadian UFO survey data and meteor researchers alike have found that timing can help separate fireballs, aircraft, satellites and astronomical objects from genuinely unresolved cases. Seconds-long flashes and fireballs

A sighting that lasts only a few seconds is frequently consistent with a meteor or fireball rather than an aircraft or hovering object. Fireballs are exceptionally bright meteors entering Earth’s atmosphere. Most are visible for only a brief period before burning out. According to the International Meteor Organization, even large fireballs generally remain visible for only a few seconds, with only rare examples lasting five to ten seconds. Objects visible for substantially longer periods are more likely to be satellites or aircraft. [imo.net]imo.netour object lasts in excess of 10…Read more…

For Manitoba observers, fireballs can be especially dramatic because the province’s wide horizons allow people to follow a meteor’s path over a large section of sky. Witnesses often describe:

  • A bright white, green or orange streak.
  • Rapid movement across the horizon.
  • Sudden fragmentation into multiple pieces.
  • A bright terminal flash. [amsmeteors.org]amsmeteors.orgAmerican Meteor SocietyFireballsA fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, generally brighter than magnitude -4, which is about…
  • An event over before a camera can be raised.

These characteristics regularly generate UFO reports because the experience is unexpected and intense. Historical Canadian UFO surveys have repeatedly noted that meteors, bolides and fireballs enter UFO databases because witnesses do not always recognise them immediately. One complication is the persistent trail left behind by some bright fireballs. While the meteor itself may last only seconds, the glowing train can remain visible for much longer. Meteor organisations note that these trains usually last a few seconds but can occasionally remain visible for several minutes while being distorted by upper-atmosphere winds. Witnesses sometimes mistake these lingering shapes for a hovering object that has stopped moving. Long sightings and astronomical explanations

At the opposite end of the spectrum are reports lasting many minutes or even hours. Such cases are generally less consistent with meteors and more consistent with slow-moving or apparently stationary objects.

Canadian UFO researchers have long noted a recurring pattern: witnesses observe a bright light low on the horizon for an extended period and never realise they are looking at a star or planet. In historical Canadian survey analysis, investigators specifically highlighted reports of stationary flashing lights observed for hours that later proved to be astronomical objects. In Manitoba, several factors encourage this kind of misidentification:

  • Flat terrain creates long sightlines to the horizon.
  • Bright planets such as Venus can appear unusually large or luminous near the horizon.
  • Atmospheric turbulence causes stars and planets to shimmer, flash colours and seem to move.
  • Slow apparent motion caused by Earth’s rotation is difficult to notice over short periods.

A witness may therefore report a light that seems to hover, drift slightly, brighten, dim or change colour over twenty or thirty minutes. To the observer, these behaviours can look purposeful. In reality, they often match known astronomical effects.

Satellites occupy a middle ground. They typically remain visible for several minutes as they cross the sky at a steady speed. Unlike meteors, they do not flash across the horizon in seconds. Unlike stars, they change position noticeably over time. Modern satellite constellations have increased the number of such sightings, adding another category that can be mistaken for something unusual. Why timing notes matter in witness reports

Many Manitoba UFO reports contain too little information for a firm identification. Duration can therefore become one of the most useful pieces of evidence available.

Investigators generally look for questions such as:

Was the object visible for less than ten seconds?

That increases the likelihood of a meteor or fireball, especially if rapid motion, fragmentation or a bright flash were observed. [imo.net]imo.netour object lasts in excess of 10…Read more…

Was it visible for several minutes while moving steadily?

That pattern is often more consistent with satellites or aircraft than with a meteor. [imo.net]imo.netour object lasts in excess of 10…Read more…

Did it remain visible for tens of minutes with little apparent movement?

That raises the possibility of a bright planet, star or distant aircraft seen head-on. Historical Canadian UFO analyses repeatedly note this type of misidentification. [WSI Images]img1.wsimg.comWSI Images+ + ++ ++ The 2003 CANADIAN UFO SURVEYFebruary 26, 2026 — Studies of UFO data routinely include reports of meteors, fireballs a…Published: February 26, 2026

Did the witness estimate the duration accurately?

Human estimates can be unreliable. A startling event lasting three seconds may feel much longer, while a slow-moving light observed casually can seem shorter than it was. Investigators therefore compare witness estimates with astronomical, aviation and meteor records whenever possible.

The practical lesson is that duration is not proof of any explanation, but it is one of the fastest ways to narrow the possibilities. In Manitoba’s UFO record, a brilliant object that appears and disappears within seconds often points towards a fireball or bolide. A light that remains visible for many minutes usually points investigators toward planets, stars, satellites or aircraft. When reports omit this detail, many cases remain unresolved simply because one of the most useful clues was never recorded.
