Introduction

The reported marks in Walter Lint’s field are the most tangible part of the McLeod Hill story. If a low-hovering object was genuinely present in April 1965, then any physical traces left behind would potentially provide stronger evidence than witness recollections alone. The difficulty is that the surviving descriptions are brief, inconsistent and largely retrospective. Some accounts refer to “circular holes”, while later retellings describe three circular depressions or indentations visible in a hay field. No known photographs, measurements, soil samples or official inspection records have surfaced publicly. As a result, the marks are important to the story, but they cannot be treated as proof of an unusual event. The key question is not whether marks existed, but whether the available descriptions allow ordinary farm causes to be ruled out. The evidence suggests they do not. What was reportedly found in the field

The shortest published version of the case states that a loud hissing object was seen hovering low over a field at McLeod Hill on 14 April 1965 and that a series of circular holes was found the following morning. Later retellings linked the location to Walter Lint’s farm near Fredericton North and described three circular indentations rather than multiple holes. According to the later account, visitors to the property were shown marks in a hay field that occupied an area roughly 30 feet across. That distinction matters. A “hole” suggests penetration into the ground, while an “indentation” suggests compression of vegetation or soil. Those are very different physical effects and would point investigators towards different explanations. Unfortunately, surviving accounts do not provide enough detail to determine which description is more accurate.

The available reports also fail to answer basic questions that physical-trace investigators normally ask:

  • How deep were the marks?
  • Were they arranged in a geometric pattern?
  • Did they affect soil, vegetation, or both?
  • Were they photographed?
  • How long did they remain visible?
  • Did anyone inspect them independently?

Without answers to those questions, the marks remain an anecdotal observation rather than a documented physical trace.

Farm machinery, animals, weather and other mundane possibilities

The strongest criticism of the McLeod Hill trace claim is not that the marks were impossible to see, but that they were never documented well enough to eliminate ordinary explanations.

Agricultural activity

A working farm naturally produces circular and semi-circular ground disturbances. Tractor wheels, haying equipment, turning manoeuvres, machinery supports and other agricultural operations can flatten vegetation or leave depressions. If the field had recently been worked, later observers might have interpreted unusual-looking impressions through the lens of the UFO story they had already heard.

The later account specifically mentions cut hay. Once a field has been cut, patterns in the remaining vegetation can appear more visible than they would in standing growth. What looks unusual after a dramatic local rumour may not have attracted attention under ordinary circumstances. Livestock and wildlife

Large animals can create surprisingly regular depressions in soft ground. Repeated use of the same resting spots, feeding areas or paths can produce circular or oval marks. Because no measurements survive, there is no way to compare the reported marks with known livestock effects.

This does not prove an animal explanation, but it illustrates a broader problem: investigators cannot test alternatives when the physical dimensions are unknown.

Weather and ground conditions

Spring conditions in New Brunswick often involve thawing soil, moisture variations and freeze-thaw effects. Soft ground can develop depressions naturally, while wind and rain can alter vegetation patterns within hours or days.

If marks were discovered only after an unusual object was reported, witnesses may have connected unrelated ground features with the sighting. This is a common challenge in physical-trace cases, where timing alone can create an apparent relationship between two events.

Human activity

Another possibility is simple human disturbance. Curious visitors arriving after rumours of a landing could unintentionally alter a site. By the time later observers inspected the field, they may have been looking at marks that had already been modified by foot traffic or other activity.

Because there is no documented chain of custody for the site, investigators cannot know what condition the field was in when the first marks were observed.

Why the reported marks do not strongly support an exotic explanation

Physical traces become significant when they display characteristics that are difficult to explain conventionally. Examples in stronger trace cases include documented burn patterns, laboratory-tested residues, measurable changes in vegetation, or detailed photographs taken shortly after discovery.

None of those elements are known from McLeod Hill.

The reported marks may have been genuine depressions in the field, but the surviving descriptions do not establish any unusual properties. There are no reports of:

  • Heat damage.
  • Chemical residues.
  • Radiation measurements.
  • Soil analysis.
  • Plant abnormalities.
  • Instrumented observations.

The marks therefore tell us little about the nature of the object reportedly seen nearby. Even if the sighting occurred exactly as described, the field evidence does not independently confirm it.

Why missing measurements limit any conclusion

The greatest weakness in the McLeod Hill trace claim is not scepticism; it is missing information.

If investigators had recorded the diameter, depth, spacing and orientation of the marks, later researchers could compare them with known agricultural, environmental and mechanical causes. Photographs could reveal whether they resembled wheel tracks, animal impressions, soil subsidence or something less familiar. Soil samples might show whether any physical alteration had occurred.

Instead, the surviving record consists largely of recollections preserved decades after the event. The later retellings add colour and local context, but they do not replace contemporary documentation. Even the researcher who revisited the story reportedly found no contemporary newspaper coverage despite searching local sources. For that reason, the McLeod Hill field marks occupy an uncertain position in New Brunswick UFO history. They remain interesting because they represent one of the province’s few reported ground-trace cases, yet the available evidence is too sparse to determine whether the marks reflected an unusual physical event, an ordinary farm feature, or something in between. The most defensible conclusion is that the traces were never documented well enough to distinguish confidently between mundane and extraordinary explanations.
